Using Hair Sticks

How to Use Your New Hair Sticks

Hair sticks are a great way to keep your hair in a bun. Once you learn how to use them, they will keep your hair up, out of the way, and looking beautiful all day.

If you've never used hair sticks, it can seem like you will never figure them out. With practice you will figure out how to make them work for you. Here are the basic steps I always tell people when they are trying to learn how to use hair sticks:

  • Make the bun of your choice. A cinnabun is a quick and easy bun that most people can do at any length. A messy bun is another good choice.
  • When you begin to insert your stick, point it away from the center of your bun. This is because you are going to scoop a bit of hair from that direction before wiggling your stick through your bun. Scoop a bit of hair and then turn the stick back towards the center.
  • As you wiggle the stick through your bun, try to weave (or sew) it through the middle. If you are very lucky, you will be able to hold the bun with one stick.
  • Now you will take your second stick and use the same method to scoop and wiggle through your bun. If you need this second stick to hold the bun in place, I find that having the sticks cross in the middle of the bun can be helpful.

If you have access to You Tube, there are a lot of great tutorials there. Sometimes it is easier to learn by watching and listening to someone tell you how to do it. Here is a tutorial that I think is very helpful:

Some beginner tips:

  • try putting your hair up in a pony tail before making the bun
  • bun your hair when it is damp (not wet, that is bad for wood sticks!)
  • try not to get frustrated and angry
  • practice, practice, practice

Long hair forums can be a great place to look for help when you are learning how to use hair sticks.

If it takes you a long time to figure hair sticks out, don't feel bad. It took me a couple years to really figure them out. I broke quite a few cheap plastic sticks trying to learn how to put my hair up!
